Wednesday Vignette; if Derek Jarman lived on the Southern California coast

Derek Jarman's garden at Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, Kent, is known for it's inhospitable conditions and instantly recognizable style, with found driftwood and metal artwork interspersed among the plants. There is nothing soft or easy about it. The plants, grown in shingle, must withstand high winds and salt air.

I was thinking about Derek Jarman's garden as I planted up this piece of driftwood. I used tender succulents, instead of tough alpines (like sempervivum), while musing on what plants Derek Jarman's garden may have contained if he lived in Southern California, rather than the coast of England.

I recently added a new page to my sidebar, Upcycle and Plant, the dg shop. Rather than plant up multiple items at a time, like I did this spring, I plan to make things as time and materials allow, and put them up for sale one at a time. This driftwood piece—if Derek Jarman lived on the Southern California coast—is the first. If you're curious click on over to the page for additional photos and information.
