I don't remember who interviewed me, but I remember being asked to ID a couple of plants they'd taken photos of—and to provide the nursery name where I'd purchased them. When I said I'd bought them at a pet store, well that was obviously not the answer they were after. There was silence. This was back when Lila (our adorable chug) was still alive and I frequented a local shop, Pets on Broadway. My friend (and plant guy extraordinaire) Nanthawat Jiranuwatana was responsible for their sweet selection of plants. Fast forward to just about the time I broke my ankle and Nat was working to get the new Plants on Broadway up and running, I finally visited last week...
This building was previously a wine bar, I always meant to visit, but never did. It's right across the street from Pets on Broadway.
Nat had warned me it was mainly a houseplant store, but they've got a nicely curated little selection of outdoor plants too (above). I've been smitten with these Pyrrosia lingua ‘Variegata’ from Little Prince of Oregon for quite awhile now.
And of course, there were agaves...
Looking around inside now...
The small sign in the middle indicates there are exciting things on the way for this space. I believe it, as the whole set up had a great vibe.
Do you ever forget about something you own, and once loved? These pins reminded me of an agave in bloom pin I purchased at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. I must dig that out and wear it again.
Did I mention the helpful signage? (cause there's a real plant person in charge!)
Whenever I see this label on a nepenthes it cracks me up.
I mean sure, it's pet friendly as long as your pet isn't an insect!

More insect eating, pet-friendly, plants.
Portland locals you'll want to check out this shop! And there are more exciting developments from Nanthawat and his own The Other Side Nursery coming soon....
